New York PostDC Mayor Declares Emergency Over Historic Potomac Sewage Spill, Requests Federal Aid
DC Mayor Muriel Bowser declared a public emergency and requested a presidential disaster declaration after a 72-inch sewer pipe collapsed on Jan. 19, releasing an estimated 243–250 million gallons of raw sewage into the Potomac River. The spill, considered the largest of its kind in US history, has triggered a political dispute between Trump and Maryland Gov. Wes Moore over jurisdictional responsibility. FEMA's capacity to respond is limited by a partial DHS funding shutdown.
