On February 22, 2026, Russia conducted a large-scale aerial attack on Ukraine using approximately 50 missiles and 297 drones. Ukraine's air force reported shooting down or neutralizing 274 drones and 33 missiles, with 14 missiles and 23 drones striking 14 locations. The attacks primarily targeted energy infrastructure in regions including Kyiv, Odesa, Kharkiv, Dnipro, Kirovohrad, Mykolaiv, Poltava, and Sumy, though residential buildings and railway infrastructure were also hit.
At least one person was killed in the Kyiv region, with eight people rescued from rubble. Additional casualties included approximately 15 injured in Kyiv region (including four children) and six injured in Kharkiv. Fires erupted in the Odesa region following strikes on energy facilities. The attacks come two days before the fourth anniversary of Russia's February 24, 2022 invasion and occurred amid ongoing U.S.-brokered peace negotiations in Geneva, which have stalled over territorial disputes.
In a separate incident unrelated to the Russian attacks, an explosion in Lviv killed a police officer and injured 25 people. Ukrainian authorities arrested a suspect and are investigating it as a terrorist incident. Russia's Ministry of Defense reported destroying 86 Ukrainian drones overnight, and Ukrainian drones hit an oil depot in Russian-occupied Luhansk.
