HBO concluded the first season of 'A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms,' a Game of Thrones prequel series adapted from George R.R. Martin's 'Tales of Dunk and Egg' novellas. The show follows Ser Duncan the Tall (Peter Claffey), a hedge knight, and his squire Egg (Dexter Sol Ansell), who is secretly Prince Aegon Targaryen, as they travel through Westeros approximately 90 years before the events of Game of Thrones.
The six-episode season culminated in a trial by combat that resulted in the death of Prince Baelor Targaryen, the heir to the Iron Throne — an event that Martin himself has identified as pivotal to Westeros history, eventually leading to the crowning of the Mad King decades later. The finale also strongly implied through flashback that Dunk may never have been formally knighted, leaving his claim to knighthood ambiguous.
The series achieved a 93% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes, the highest of any Game of Thrones series, and a 9.0/10 overall rating on IMDB, making it 2026's highest-rated show on that platform. Season 2, already in production, will adapt the second novella 'The Sworn Sword' and is expected to air in 2027.
