US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff stated in a Fox News interview that President Trump is questioning why Iran has not agreed to curb its nuclear program despite significant US military deployments to the Middle East. Witkoff said Iran has enriched uranium to 60% purity and could be "a week away" from having material for a nuclear weapon, though Iran has not reached the 90% weapons-grade threshold.
Indirect talks between the US and Iran took place in Geneva on February 17, with both sides describing them as constructive but acknowledging significant gaps remain. Iran's Foreign Minister called the talks "positive" and said the countries agreed on "guiding principles," with Iran expected to return with detailed proposals in early March. The US is demanding Iran end all uranium enrichment, limit its missile program, and stop supporting armed groups in the region. Iran says its nuclear program is peaceful and is willing to accept some curbs in exchange for sanctions relief, but rejects tying this to missiles or regional activities.
The US has built up substantial military forces in the region, including two carrier strike groups. Trump has suggested a decision on potential military action would come within 10-15 days and said he is "considering" a limited strike to pressure Iran into a deal. Iran has warned it would strike US bases if attacked. Witkoff also confirmed he met with exiled Iranian opposition figure Reza Pahlavi at Trump's direction.
