Ahead of President Trump's State of the Union address scheduled for February 24, 2026, approximately a dozen Democratic lawmakers announced they would boycott the speech and instead attend a counter-rally called the 'People's State of the Union' on the National Mall. The event is organized by MoveOn Civic Action and MeidasTouch and is set to begin at 8:30 p.m. ET, just before Trump's 9 p.m. speech. Confirmed participants include five senators (Ed Markey, Jeff Merkley, Chris Murphy, Tina Smith, Chris Van Hollen) and seven House members (Yassamin Ansari, Becca Balint, Greg Casar, Veronica Escobar, Pramila Jayapal, Delia Ramirez, Bonnie Watson Coleman).
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries stated his intention to attend the speech, framing it as not ceding ground on Congressional territory. He advised members to either attend with 'silent defiance' or participate in alternative programming, explicitly steering them away from the disruptive protests that drew criticism during Trump's March 2025 joint address, when Rep. Al Green was ejected and others were reprimanded.
A separate counter-event, 'State of the Swamp,' is planned at the National Press Club at 7 p.m., featuring lawmakers including Reps. Eric Swalwell, Jason Crow, Seth Moulton, Dan Goldman, Eugene Vindman, and Sen. Ron Wyden, organized by DEFIANCE.org and the Portland Frog Brigade.
The boycott comes amid a partial government shutdown over DHS funding tied to immigration enforcement disputes, and follows fatal shootings of two Minnesota residents involving federal immigration agents. The White House said the address would proceed as scheduled.
