During Saturday's college basketball game between No. 17 St. John's and Providence, a fight broke out with 14:25 remaining in the second half. Providence forward Duncan Powell committed a hard foul on St. John's forward Bryce Hopkins during a fast-break layup attempt, making contact with Hopkins' head and face area. Hopkins immediately got up and confronted Powell, initiating a physical altercation that escalated when players from both benches became involved.
After a nearly 20-minute delay, referees ejected six players total: Powell and guard Jaylin Sellers from Providence, and Dillon Mitchell, Kelvin Odih, Ruben Prey, and Sadiku Ibine Ayo from St. John's. The latter three St. John's players were ejected for leaving the bench area during the altercation. The game had additional tension as Hopkins had transferred from Providence after last season.
At the time of the fight, Providence led 40-39. After play resumed, St. John's scored eight consecutive points and controlled the remainder of the game, winning 79-69 to extend their winning streak to 11 games. Later in the game, Providence's Jamier Jones was also ejected for pushing St. John's Zuby Ejiofor from behind on a fast break.
