At the 2026 Winter Olympics in Bormio, Italy, on February 14, Lucas Pinheiro Braathen won the men's giant slalom with a combined time of 2:25.00 across two runs, finishing 0.58 seconds ahead of Switzerland's Marco Odermatt (silver) and 0.95 seconds ahead after the first run. Loic Meillard of Switzerland took bronze. This marked Brazil's first medal at any Winter Olympics and the first medal for any South American country at the Winter Games.
Pinheiro Braathen was born in Oslo to a Norwegian father and Brazilian mother. He competed for Norway through the 2022 Beijing Olympics, where he did not finish in giant slalom or slalom. In 2023, after winning the World Cup slalom title, he retired from skiing due to conflicts with the Norwegian Ski Federation over self-expression and sponsorship freedom. In March 2024, he announced his return to competitive skiing, this time representing Brazil. He had already achieved Brazil's first World Cup podium and first World Cup win in alpine skiing before the Olympics.
The race took place in snowy, foggy conditions. As the first skier on the course, Pinheiro Braathen recorded 1:13.92 in the opening run, establishing a significant lead. Despite some imperfect turns in his second run, he maintained enough of his advantage to secure gold. After crossing the finish line and seeing his winning position, he collapsed to the snow in emotion before celebrating with samba dancing.
