On Tuesday afternoon in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia (population ~2,400), 18-year-old Jesse Van Rootselaar killed eight people before dying by suicide. The shooter first killed their 39-year-old mother Jennifer Jacobs and 11-year-old stepbrother Emmett Jacobs at home, then traveled to Tumbler Ridge Secondary School (160 students) and shot a teacher and five students aged 12-13. At least two other students were injured with gunshot wounds.
Police confirmed they had visited the family home "on multiple occasions over the past several years" regarding mental health concerns. Officers had twice taken Van Rootselaar for formal mental health assessments under British Columbia's mental health act. Approximately two years before the shooting, police seized firearms from the residence under the criminal code; the lawful owner later petitioned for their return and police returned them. Van Rootselaar had held a minor's firearms license that expired in 2024 and had no firearms registered in their name.
Police identified Van Rootselaar as having been assigned male at birth and beginning to identify as female approximately six years ago (around age 12). The motive for the shooting remains under investigation. Prime Minister Mark Carney and opposition leaders attended a vigil Friday in Tumbler Ridge. The incident is one of Canada's deadliest mass shootings in recent years.
